Light Eczema Treatment
At Zemel Dermatology, we understand how challenging it can be to manage eczema, especially when standard treatments no longer provide relief. That’s why we offer advanced light therapy (phototherapy) as a safe, effective solution for moderate to severe eczema. This non-invasive treatment uses controlled doses of ultraviolet (UV) light to reduce inflammation, soothe itching, and promote healthier skin over time. Ideal for patients seeking alternatives to topical steroids or systemic medications, our light eczema treatment is customized to match your skin type and condition severity.
Backed by clinical expertise and modern technology, Zemel Dermatology is committed to helping you achieve long-lasting skin comfort and improved quality of life through targeted, professional care.
How Phototherapy Works to Reduce Eczema Symptoms
Suppression of Immune Response
Enhancement of Skin Barrier Function
One of the core problems in eczema is a weak skin barrier, which allows irritants, allergens, and microbes to penetrate easily. Phototherapy stimulates the production and maturation of keratinocyte cells that form the outermost layer of the skin. This results in more robust production of ceramides and lipids, key components of a healthy barrier. Strengthening this barrier helps reduce water loss and protects against external triggers, easing dryness and irritation.
Reduction of Microbial Colonisation
Decreased Itch and Hyperplasia
Stimulating Repair and Healing
What to Expect During and After Phototherapy Treatment Sessions
During
During your phototherapy session at Zemel Dermatology, we’ll guide you into a specialized UVB or UVA booth, or use a handheld or targeted panel depending on your treatment area. You’ll need to remove clothing over the affected area, wear protective eyewear, and skin shields. Based on your skin type and a minimal erythema dose (MED) test, the aesthetician will carefully calibrate the light exposure, often starting with just 30 seconds. The sensation is usually warm, similar to mild sun exposure, but it shouldn’t be painful. Our clinician closely monitors your skin’s response in real time, ensuring each session is safe, comfortable, and customized for you.
